UK Student Visa Refusal Reasons and How to Reapply

Most UK Student visa refusals fall into a handful of categories, and several of them are technical. Here is how to read your refusal letter and decide between review and a fresh application.

A UK Student visa refusal letter is usually more specific than people expect. It quotes the rule you failed and, often, the exact document or answer that caused the problem. That is useful. It means most refusals can be fixed, as long as you treat the letter as a list of instructions rather than a judgement.

The short version

  • Financial evidence is the most common technical reason, and the 28-day rule is where most people slip.
  • Genuine student refusals come from weak course knowledge, unclear plans or interview answers that do not match the file.
  • Administrative review only fixes caseworker errors. New evidence needs a new application.
  • Always declare a previous refusal and say what has changed.

1. Financial evidence that does not meet the rules

This is the refusal we see most, and it is almost always avoidable. The amounts themselves are clear: outstanding fees plus up to nine months of living costs, at £1,529 or £1,171 a month before 30 November 2026 and £1,570 or £1,203 from that date. The mistakes are in the detail:

Our UK funds guide walks through each rule with examples.

2. Not satisfied you are a genuine student

The Immigration Rules let the decision-maker refuse if they are not satisfied you genuinely intend to study. These refusals usually follow an interview, and the letter often quotes your answers. Typical triggers:

The fix is preparation, not new wording. Practise the questions in our credibility interview guide until you can answer from facts, in your own words.

3. Problems with the CAS or English evidence

Errors on the CAS, such as wrong fee figures, an outdated course end date or English evidence that does not match what the university assessed, can lead to refusal. Before you apply, check every line of your CAS against your offer and test results, and ask the university to correct anything wrong. A corrected CAS before applying is far easier than a reapplication afterwards.

4. Immigration history and deception

The form asks about previous refusals, overstays and breaches in any country. Leaving something out can lead to a refusal for deception and a ban on returning for years, which is far worse than the original problem. Declare everything, briefly explain it and attach evidence of what has changed since.

Administrative review or a new application?

ChooseWhen it makes sense
Administrative reviewThe officer made a clear error: ignored a document you submitted, miscalculated your funds or misapplied a rule. No new evidence allowed.
New applicationYou need to add or replace evidence, fix the 28-day period, update the CAS or prepare better for interview. Usually faster in practice.

The refusal letter states whether administrative review is available and the deadline. When in doubt, the honest answer is usually that the file needed something it did not have, which means a new application.

A reapplication plan that works

  1. List each reason in the refusal letter, word for word.
  2. For each reason, write down the evidence that answers it.
  3. Fix the funds properly, including a fresh 28-day period if needed.
  4. Contact your university about a new or updated CAS, and expect another interview.
  5. Prepare a short explanation of the refusal for any interview, and declare it on the form.

When you explain the earlier refusal, on the form or in an interview, keep it short: say what went wrong in plain words, take responsibility for it, and show the fix with evidence, such as a fresh 28-day statement or a corrected CAS.

If your refusal letter mentions genuine student concerns, send it to us before you reapply. We will tell you honestly whether the problem is your preparation, your course choice or your documents, because each one needs a different fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common reasons for a UK student visa refusal?

Financial evidence that does not meet the rules (often the 28-day holding period), doubts that the applicant is a genuine student, problems with the CAS or English evidence, and undisclosed immigration history such as a previous refusal.

Can I reapply after a UK student visa refusal?

Yes, in most cases you can apply again straight away with a new application and fee, as long as you fix the reason for refusal. You may need a new or updated CAS, and you must declare the earlier refusal.

What is an administrative review?

A request to UKVI to check whether a caseworking error was made in your decision. It is not a chance to add new evidence. It suits cases where the officer clearly misread or ignored documents you did submit. The refusal letter states whether it is available and the deadline.

Will a UK refusal affect visas for other countries?

You must declare it when other countries ask about refusals, so it becomes part of your history. A refusal you can explain clearly, with what has changed, does far less damage than one you hide.

Does my university find out if I am refused?

Yes. Universities are informed of refusals linked to their CAS, and refusals count toward their compliance figures. Contact your university quickly about a new or updated CAS.
