Since 23 March 2024 the Genuine Student (GS) requirement has replaced the old GTE essay for the Australian Subclass 500 visa. Instead of one long personal statement, you answer a series of targeted questions inside the application form, each capped at roughly 150 words. Shorter does not mean easier — every sentence now carries weight, and there is no room to hide a weak rationale behind length.

We write GS statements as a speciality, not a side service. Each answer is hand-crafted to stay within the limit while covering exactly what the criterion expects, and every line is checked against your CoE, finances and history so nothing contradicts the rest of your file.

How we help

01

Question-by-question

We draft each GS answer separately — circumstances, course choice, why Australia, career plans — so each one fully satisfies its criterion.

02

Within the word limit

Tight, deliberate writing that says more in 150 words than most applicants manage in 500, with no filler for the officer to discount.

03

Evidence alignment

Every claim maps to a document you can produce, because the fastest GS refusal is an answer your paperwork does not support.

04

Onshore fifth question

For onshore applicants we write the additional immigration-history answer with the candour the criterion rewards.

GS vs GTE — what changed, and why it matters for your statement

If you are reading advice written before 2024, it is out of date. The shift from GTE to GS changed both the format and the emphasis:

  • Format — structured in-form questions with word caps, not a single uploaded essay.
  • Emphasis — course relevance and academic/career logic carry more weight than ever.
  • Post-study intent — the GS rule explicitly recognises that genuine students may later pursue skilled migration, so honest future plans no longer count against you.
  • Tone — facts over flourish; officers reward specific, verifiable answers and discount rehearsed ones.

Writing a GS statement as if it were still a GTE essay is one of the most common and costly mistakes we see. We write to the current criterion, every time.

Frequently asked questions

What is a GS statement?

The Genuine Student (GS) statement is the set of answers you give in the Subclass 500 visa form demonstrating that study is your genuine, primary purpose in Australia. It replaced the GTE statement on 23 March 2024.

How many words is each GS answer?

Each targeted question is capped at roughly 150 words. We write to that limit deliberately, making every sentence earn its place rather than padding to fill space.

Is GS harder than the old GTE?

It is clearer to read but harder to bluff. Because answers are short and evidence-driven, a weak rationale has nowhere to hide. Well-researched, honest answers are rewarded.

Do you only write GS statements for Australia?

GS is specific to the Australian Subclass 500 visa. For other countries we write the equivalent statement of purpose or motivation letter — see our Canada, UK, New Zealand, Denmark and Finland pages.
