The UK Graduate Route Drops to 18 Months

Two years if you apply by 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027. For many master's students the difference comes down to when the university reports their results.

For years, the two-year Graduate Route was one of the main reasons students chose the UK over other destinations. That offer ends with 2026. Bachelor's and master's graduates who apply on or after 1 January 2027 will get 18 months of post-study work rights. Doctoral graduates keep three years. The change sounds simple, but the timing has caught out a lot of current students who assumed their graduation date would decide it.

The short version

  • Apply on or before 31 December 2026: two years. Apply on or after 1 January 2027: 18 months.
  • PhD and other doctoral graduates keep three years.
  • You can only apply after your university reports that you completed your course, while your Student visa is still valid.
  • For students starting in 2026 or later, plan your career around 18 months.

What exactly is changing

The Graduate visa lets you stay in the UK after a degree and work at any level, look for work or switch to another route, without a sponsor. GOV.UK now states the rule plainly: if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 you can stay for two years, and if you apply on or after 1 January 2027 you can stay for 18 months. PhD graduates continue to get three years.

The government's stated reason is that too many graduates on the route were not moving into graduate-level jobs. Whatever you think of that argument, the shorter period changes how you should plan your final year.

Why your results date matters

You cannot apply for the Graduate visa the day you submit your dissertation. Your university has to tell the Home Office that you have successfully completed the course, and you must apply from inside the UK while your Student visa is still valid. So the earliest date you can apply is set by your university's reporting, not by you.

Your situationLikely outcome
Master's finished in September 2026, completion reported in November 2026Apply in November or December 2026 for two years
Master's finished in September 2026, completion reported in January 2027Apply from January 2027 for 18 months
January 2026 intake, course ends early 202718 months
PhD completed at any pointThree years

If you finish in late 2026, ask your university registry when completion will be reported and make sure your results are not held up by unpaid fees or a missing form.

Planning around 18 months

Eighteen months is still useful. It just leaves less room for a slow job search. The graduates we have seen do best on a short window tend to do three things:

  1. Start the search in the final term. Applications for graduate schemes often close months before courses end.
  2. Target sponsors from the start. If you hope to move to a Skilled Worker visa, look for employers with a sponsor licence and roles that meet the salary rules for your occupation.
  3. Keep the plan realistic. A clear target role, sector and city makes a shorter period workable.

Should you mention the Graduate Route in your statement?

Carefully. Your university statement and any credibility interview are about whether you are a genuine student. Saying that post-study work is your main reason for choosing the UK invites the wrong conclusion. A brief, honest mention inside a wider career plan is fine.

Written this way, the plan is honest about using the route, keeps the degree at the centre and ties everything back to a specific outcome. It reads like a plan, not a wish.

Is the UK still worth it?

For many students, yes. One-year master's degrees keep the total cost and time lower than in many countries, and 18 months of open work rights is still more than some destinations offer. But the UK no longer wins on post-study work alone, so choose it for the course, the university and the career fit. Those reasons also happen to be exactly what an interviewer wants to hear.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the UK Graduate visa become 18 months?

For applications made on or after 1 January 2027. If you apply on or before 31 December 2026, you get the current two years. PhD graduates keep three years either way.

Does the date I finish my course or the date I apply decide the length?

The application date decides it. But you can only apply after your university has reported to the Home Office that you completed the course, and while you still hold your Student visa, so your results date controls the earliest day you can apply.

Can I apply for the Graduate visa early to keep two years?

Only once your university has reported successful completion. If that happens in December 2026, you can apply before 1 January 2027. You cannot apply before completion is reported.

Is 18 months enough to move to a Skilled Worker visa?

It can be, but it leaves less room. Start looking for sponsoring employers during your final term rather than after graduation, and check the salary and skill thresholds for your field early.

Should the shorter Graduate Route change what I write in my SOP?

Your SOP and credibility answers should focus on your study and your long-term plan. Mention post-study work only honestly and briefly, as part of a realistic career plan, never as the reason for coming.
